Sri Lanka
This stunning, teardrop-shaped island, set roughly halfway between Africa and Asia, sits just off the southeast coast of the Indian sub-continent and is, without doubt, an Indian Ocean tropical paradise. With a coastline of around 1,000 miles and boasting some of the finest beaches in the world, Sri Lanka is a magnet for sunworshippers. But it’s not just the palm-fringed beaches and the azure, crystal clear ocean that attract the discerning visitor. There are 8,000 ft mountain peaks, ancient cities and cultures, exotic temples, tea plantations as far as the eye can see, fascinating wildlife, delicious Sri Lankan cuisine, amazingly friendly locals and, of course, the island’s most famous residents, the elephants. If you’re into a more local way of life - lively bars, great value-for-money restaurants, bustling markets and traditional, colonial-style buildings - then Colombo, the capital, is the place to be. And inland, there’s history and culture everywhere. A Sri Lanka holiday wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the magnificent hilltop town of Kandy and the ‘cultural triangle’ of Dambulla, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa.
