Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
Menorca is, without doubt, the quintessential Mediterranean island. It has everything – beautiful beaches, pretty little villages, an attractive island capital, plenty to see and do and, being just 30 miles from end to end, it’s very easy to get around. What it doesn't have is over the top commercialisation and wall-to-wall ‘entertainment’ making it the perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing holiday in attractive surroundings. There's a strong British influence, too, as the island was occupied for a great part of the 18th century by the British (including Admiral Nelson) and, in a slightly less cultural vein, several of the island's gin distilleries still have British links. Menorca's two main towns, Mahon (these days called Mao), the capital, and Ciudadela, are at opposite ends of the island and are linked by the island's only main road. From this road there are several smaller roads leading off towards the many splendid beaches which fringe the island's north and south coasts. Travel One's chosen resort is Mahon with it superb natural harbour, a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants and a good local bus service to Ciudadela and other places of interest.
