Crete, Greece
|
 |
| Apart from being one of
the largest islands in the Mediterranean (some 200 miles from
east to west), Crete is also one of the most beautiful. Scenically,
the contrasts are stupendous - magnificent mountain ranges along
the entire island; lovely beaches; the incomparable Samaria
Gorge in the south-west; delightful, unspoilt villages dotted
all over the island; and carpet after carpet of wild flowers,
particularly in May when the whole of Crete is ablaze with colour.
Island sightseeing is a must. Apart from the ancient site at
Knossos, which needs little introduction, theres the must-see
Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, Chania, a gem of a town
with a lovely Venetian harbour, and, of course, centuries-old
monasteries and churches just about everywhere. Its a
walkers paradise (the Samaria Gorge being the magnet)
and, because of its size, its also ideal for a hiring
a car for a few days to explore vast expanses of its hinterland
which the average visitor rarely sets eyes on. Its easy
to understand why people return, year after year, to this, one
of Greeces most splendid islands. |
| The family-owned Gouves
Bay is a small, friendly hotel situated to the east of Heraklion
and close to the marina and centre of Gouves on Cretes
north coast .The shoreline, a mix of rocks and shingle, is 100m
from the hotel whilst the nearest sandy beach, with plenty of
sunbeds and parasols, is a 6 or 7 minute stroll away. Most of
the resorts shops, restaurants and bars are located along
the sea front and on the main village street. After dark, nightlife
is low-key and centres mostly on the sea-front bars and cafés.
If youre after something busier and a little more Greek,
Heraklion, the island capital, is just 10 miles away either
by bus or (cheap) taxi. Its all very laid back with avrio
(the Greek mañana) being the key word. The Gouves Bay
comprises two buildings with all the air-conditioned bedrooms
having a private shower & wc, balcony or terrace, telephone,
satellite TV, fridge and safe. The hotel also has a small lounge
area, a bar, a large swimming pool (with pool bar) and a sun
terrace with sunbeds and parasols. Its very friendly and
a great base for exploring this beautiful island. |
