Apart from being one of
the largest islands in the Mediterranean (some 200 miles from
east to west), Crete is also one of the most beautiful. Scenically,
the contrasts are stupendous - magnificent mountain ranges along
the entire island; lovely beaches; the incomparable Samaria
Gorge in the south-west; delightful, unspoilt villages dotted
all over the island; and carpet after carpet of wild flowers,
particularly in May when the whole of Crete is ablaze with colour.
Island sightseeing is a must. Apart from the ancient site at
Knossos, which needs little introduction, there’s the must-see
Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, Chania, a gem of a town
with a lovely Venetian harbour, and, of course, centuries-old
monasteries and churches just about everywhere. It’s a
walkers’ paradise (the Samaria Gorge being the magnet)
and, because of its size, it’s also ideal for a hiring
a car for a few days to explore vast expanses of its hinterland
which the average visitor rarely sets eyes on. It’s easy
to understand why people return, year after year, to this, one
of Greece’s most splendid islands.

The family-owned Oasis Beach is a small, friendly hotel situated in Anissaras on Crete's north
coast. It's less than 300m from the hotel to the beach whilst there are a few bars and
tavernas nearby in the village. However, in bustling Hersonissos, just 4kms away, there
is a wide selection of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and night spots. If you want
something a little more Greek, Heraklion, the island capital, is easily reached by local bus.
It's all very laid back with 'avrio' (the Greek maņana) being the key word. The Oasis Beach
has 40 simple but comfortable bedrooms which are located in 3 separate buildings set in
approximately 4,000 square metres of attractive gardens with shrubs and flowers everywhere.
The owner is very proud of his vegetable garden and offers guests the opportunity to choose
(when available) the fresh vegetables they'd like for dinner! All the hotel's bedrooms are
air-conditioned (7 euros per day payable locally), and have private shower & wc, balcony or
terrace, telephone and radio. The hotel also has a restaurant, a bar and TV lounge, a tennis
court, a swimming pool and a sun terrace with sunbeds and parasols. It's very, very friendly
and a great place to relax and enjoy some wonderful Cretan hospitality.
