Algarve, Portugal

|
Superb Atlantic beaches, genuine hospitality and a wonderful climate all help to make the Algarve one
of the most popular destinations for European travellers. The 100 mile long coastline is a mix of
established and modern resorts, fishing villages, ocean-side golf courses and mile after mile of golden
beaches washed twice daily by the ever obliging Atlantic. There's plenty to see and do on the coast but
should you venture just a few miles inland you'll find unspoilt towns and villages full of character and
traditional charm - Silves, for example, the old Moorish capital with its splendid castle, and Loule with
its bustling Saturday market. To the east lies Spain with Seville, one of Europe's most beautiful cities,
about a 2 hour drive from Monte Gordo. Ayamonte, the border town dividing Spain and Portugal, is
just a short distance away and is very attractive with its narrow streets, squares and whitewashed
houses and is well worth a visit. For sports enthusiasts there's an abundance of golf courses and tennis
courts on the Algarve and let's not forget Portuguese cuisine, especially the excellent seafood including
prawns, clams, lobster, all kinds of fresh fish and the famous grilled sardines.

Hotel Baia Monte Gordo ***
|
|
Monte Gordo is our Algarve base for 2009 and it's not hard to see why. Located less than a
15 minute drive from the Spanish border (and about 2 hours from Seville), the resort boasts
one of the Algarve's best beaches, 14 kms long with fine, white sand and with a choice of
watersports for the seriously active. The sea front and promenade has a good selection of
shops, bars, cafés and restaurants and there's some low-key nightlife after dark. Travel One
guests will be staying at the Baia Monte Gordo, a friendly, unpretentious hotel located in a
residential area but close to the centre and only 300m from the superb beach. The hotel
has a small rooftop swimming pool, a jacuzzi, complimentary sunbeds and parasols, a sun
terrace, a restaurant, a small lounge and a bar. There's also live music a couple of nights a
week. Bedrooms, all twins or doubles for sole occupancy, are comfortably furnished and
have TV, air-conditioning, safe (payable locally), bath/sh/wc with hairdryer, and a balcony.
It's very relaxed but it's also the perfect spot for some very good sightseeing and some very
serious swimming, sunbathing and walking on Monte Gordo's fabulous beach.
